1. Brush your entire mouth twice a day.

Notice I didn’t just say brush your teeth. You also need to clean your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth.   Take your time and spend two minutes thoroughly cleaning your mouth. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards your gum line. Use gentle circular motions to brush every side of each tooth. You don’t need to press very hard! After brushing all your teeth and gums, brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue.

2. Always floss your teeth before brushing.

Flossing is as important as brushing your teeth. The point of flossing is not just to get out little bits of food stuck in your teeth. Flossing reduces plaque. It also stimulates your gums and helps lower inflammation around your gums.

3. Eat teeth-friendly foods.

Foods high in calcium, like milk, help build strong bones and teeth. Foods high in Vitamin C, like oranges or kiwi, help the body fight infections like gingivitis. Gingivitis is a periodontal disease that causes gum inflammation and bleeding.

4. Limit soda, alcohol, and tobacco.

Too much soda and alcohol can deplete calcium levels in your body. This leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Tobacco causes many periodontal issues, including oral cancer.  Tobacco should be avoided.

5. Visit the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings.

Make it a habit to visit a dentist regularly. It is very important to identify dental issues early. Full oral checkups and teeth cleanings keep your mouth healthy.
