Snoring is very common for many people, affecting 30-50% of our population! It is also a symptom of a health condition called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a disorder where you take pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. This can happen 30 plus times an hour. Normal breathing then continues and is sometimes followed by a gasping or choking sound. It is recommended to visit a sleep clinic to have a true diagnosis. In reality, you wouldn’t normally think to visit your dentist for snoring. However, a dental/oral device can actually help solve the problem!
At Southwood Dental, we have devices that can help with mild to moderate cases of obstructive sleep apnea. One we often use is the mandibular advancement device. It resembles a sports mouth guard and helps force the lower jaw forward and down to help alleviate airways.
Another device that can be used for sleep apnea is a tongue retraining device. A splint is used to hold the tongue in the correct position and helps keep the airway open. We recommend regular check-ups with this device, as it requires periodic adjustments.
These are just a few solutions we recommend. If you have concerns about snoring or sleep apnea, visit us at Southwood Dental Studio to discuss possible solutions!
