TMJ Pain Relief through Exercise

TMJ or TMD (Temporomandibular Joint disorder is a painful condition that occurs when something goes wrong with your joints and jaw muscles. In some cases, TMJ happens due to injury, inflammation and muscle spasms but the exact cause of the disorder is unknown.

For some people, TMJ disorder can start without any symptoms and pain/discomfort disappears with little or no treatment at all. However, in some cases, the pain caused by TMJ can be chronic and severe. Treatment usually involves more than one option to be done at the same time. Medications (such as pain reliever and muscle relaxants), therapy (such as counseling and use of mouthguard) and surgical procedures are some of the treatment management of TMJ disorders.

According to a study, stretching and exercising the muscles of the jaw can increase the mouth opening range and relieves TMJ pain. Furthermore, exercise provides a calming effect that can decrease pain and stress in your body, which in turn relieves pain caused by TMJ disorders.
