What is Laughing Gas?
Nitrous oxide is a type of anesthesia used in dentistry. It is also known as “laughing gas” because it creates a sense of relaxation and euphoria. According to the American Dental Association, Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective anesthesia that can help a patient feel comfortable during dental procedures.
Nitrous oxide is an odourless and colourless gas that has been used in dentistry for many years. It is a local sedation that works fast and safe on patients. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that fits over the patient’s nose.
During the administration of Nitrous Oxide, patients may initially feel some light-headed or tingling sensations. These sensations will change shortly after and make them feel comfortable, euphoric, and calm, while they are conscious. As soon as the nitrous oxide wears off, a patient will receive pure oxygen for about five minutes to prevent a headache. The oxygen also helps patients to stay awake and alert after the sedation and procedure is completed.
If you are undergoing a dental procedure, your dentist will determine the right type of sedation for you. Talk to our dental team at Southwood Dental Studio in London about nitrous oxide!
