What are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial tooth replacements that allow patients with missing teeth to maintain facial structure, speak well and eat properly. They can be used to replace a singular missing tooth, several missing teeth or all of a patient's teeth. These dentures can either be conventional or immediate.

Your oral and overall health greatly benefit when you replace missing teeth. If you are missing some or all of your natural teeth, dentures are an affordable option for replacing them.

What are Full & Partial Dentures?

Depending on your needs, you can be fitted for either full or partial dentures.

  • Full Dentures

Also known as false teeth or complete dentures, these dentures can either be immediate or conventional.

    Conventional dentures

Conventional dentures are placed in the mouth after all teeth have been removed. If teeth need to be extracted, your gum tissue will need to fully heal before you are fitted for dentures. This healing process usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks.

    Immediate Dentures

Typically considered a secondary solution until conventional dentures arrive, immediate dentures are created in advance of a tooth extraction and placed after teeth are extracted.

  • Partial Dentures

If you are missing more than a few teeth, you may be an ideal candidate for partial dentures. They are made of one or more artificial teeth, and held in place by clasps that fit your natural teeth.

They can also be used with a tooth replacement such as a dental crown. You can also remove them for cleaning and sleeping.

Benefits of Dentures

When you lose all of your teeth, sagging facial muscles can make you appear older. Dentures can help fill out your facial profile and appearance. They can be created to closely resemble your natural teeth so that the change in your appearance is almost undetectable to the naked eye.

Filling in gaps caused by missing teeth is also essential to maintaining your long-term oral health. By creating dentures to fit your mouth, your dentist will also help keep your remaining teeth from moving, which can lead to more serious issues such as gum disease.
